My cast iron grill pan needs re-seasoning?

So I acquired a grid iron stove from a friend who does not use it often. I do know not to use soap and try to scrub off the bits that fit. But every time I use it, it smokes. Last night I have asparagus with a little olive oil and salt and pepper and smoked like a chimney darn. I have an electric motor for pan heat is about medium high (7). Can someone tell me what to do ?!???? I love cooking with this thing, but my lungs are not handling the smoke very well. Is it possible I had the heat too high?

The pan must re-start when food seasoning solvent, smoking is caused by small pieces of food stuck to scrub the pan is best, or try seasoning. I clean my cast iron stuff with a little oil and a teaspoon of salt as an abrasive.
