cooking pan safety
safety of foods, BPA-free plastics; vs. nonstick stainless glassware vs. sandstone?
with all the research coming out on BPA and plastics, I have several questions on cooking and storage: 1) are plastic storage containers as safe as gladware long as you do not put them in the dishwasher? What about the freezer? if you can not freeze and similar things, such as freezer bags ziplock, which should be frozen in your food? 2) I threw my nonstick pans because of what I read on coatings leach in foods. Stainless is best? 3) What about cooking in the glass vs. sandstone? I read ancient sandstone can lead leaching into food, but obviously the newer stuff (Corningware, Corelle) would not do that. but overall, is safer glassware, even if she does not cook also regularly? I bought sandstone (Corningware) and he said not to soak the mussels in water, thereby facilitating removal seeminly food rather difficult. been looking glass casserole pans and can not find. thank you!
1. I have no idea, it is preferable if you can avoid the freezing of food at all. Buy what you need now to shop and eat fresh. If you feel you need more later – buying later. I do not really know a safe material for foods from the freezer. 2. I always use unlined cast iron if I can. I buy Pots And Pans for cheap in thrift stores. You can also find non-coated stainless too. 3. They sell glass casserole pans everywhere – Macy's, Target, etc. Again, I buy mine in thrift stores for cheap, but you can find in any store.
